GeM’s Contribution to ‘Make in India’: Encouraging Domestic Manufacturing and Products

The Government of India launched its ambitious and revolutionary Make in India program in  2014 with the main objectives to promote domestic manufacturing and strengthen India’s status as a hub for global manufacturing. The Make in India program seeks to increase overall economic growth by concentrating on key industries and policy changes. It is based on the principles of the Swadeshi Movement that took place in Colonial India.

Government e Marketplace ( GeM ) has worked excellently and promoted this campaign of Make In India and taking Indian goods on a global platform. It has acted as a driving force in the government procurement process, cutting bureaucratic red tape and fostering efficiency.

GeM’s centralized digital platform has changed this environment by giving vendors and customers a single point of contact.

By prioritizing domestic products, GeM has played a crucial role in reducing India’s dependence on imports. The platform offers a preference for domestically manufactured goods, especially under the Make in India category. This preference encourages government buyers to prioritize domestic products over imports, leading to increased demand for locally made goods.

GeM has promoted and resulted in innovation in the nation as well as supporting domestic manufacturing. It actively supports ‘Make in India’ products that represent innovation, originality, independence, and quality, and by featuring these products on the platform, GeM has given domestic producers a chance to highlight their expertise and increase their awareness among government buyers.

Collaborations and cooperation between governmental organizations and domestic producers have been facilitated through GeM. As a result, specialized solutions have been created, further solidifying the relationship between the government and the home manufacturing industry, and the citizens creating a more harmonious and peaceful atmosphere of trust and efficiency.

GeM’s success in encouraging domestic manufacturing has extended to all corners of India, promoting regional development. Local manufacturers from different states and regions can now participate in government procurement, reducing the concentration of industrial activities in certain areas and encouraging a more balanced distribution of economic growth across the country.

GeM’s focus and determination on innovation have encouraged firms to increase their R&D spending. A knowledge-driven economy is developing as a result of the increase in R&D activities brought on by the competition to deliver distinctive and new products.

GeM has increased domestic manufacturing, which raises the need for trained laborers. Due to the abundance of employment opportunities, this has brought about across several industries, a competent and effective workforce has been developed.

The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) and the Make in India program both contributed significantly to changing India’s economic climate and boosting homegrown production and goods.

‘Make in India’ and GeM has worked in concert to create a favorable climate for domestic manufacturing, entrepreneurship, and international investment.

India is well on its path to realizing self-reliance and becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse with continued dedication and cooperation from all stakeholders.
